Since postmodernism has proved that all forms can be built anyway, since with the help of computers shapes of any kind and even hitherto non-existent ones can be generated, and since, as a result, goals such as the unity of form-function-construction or its derivatives like form-follows-function have become as obsolete as the issue of typological grounding in place and history, architecture as well as architectural theory are caught in the dead-end of exchangable "-isms", no longer knowing how to move on.

One way out of this predicament emerges through Hybrid architecture: now the processes of morphing, merging, scaling are applied to functions; this is not only the logical outcome of applying such tools but, under the term "hybrid building", also becomes relevant from the pragmatic perspective of real estate economics. Hybrid Architecture is the ultimate departure from functional differenciation and design determinism, from traditional object-architecture towards a process-oriented control of architecture.

Manfred Wolff-Plottegg is an architect and the head of the Institute for Building Theory and Design at the Technical University in Vienna, Austria. Hybrid Architecture is a research programme focusing on the redefinition of functionalism.

Seit die Postmoderne den Nachweis geliefert hat, dass sowieso alle Formen überall gebaut werden können, seit mit Hilfe des Computers auch nie da gewesene, beliebige Formen generiert werden können, seit sich folglich Ziele wie die Einheit von Form-Funktion-Konstruktion oder Ableitungen wie Form-Follows-Function als ebenso obsolet herausgestellt haben wie die typologische Verankerung in Ort und Geschichte, ist die Architektur(-theorie) im Limesbild der Austauschbarkeit der Ismen gefangen, weiß nicht mehr weiter. Ein Ausweg bahnt sich in der Hybrid Architektur an: nun werden morphing, merging, scaling prozessual auf die Funktionen angewendet; dies ist nicht nur die logische Fortsetzung in der Anwendung der tools, dies zeichnet sich auch unter dem Begriff Verfügungsbauten in der Pragmatik der Immobilienwirtschaft ab. Hybrid Architektur ist die ultimative Abkehr von Funktionstrennungen und vom Planungsdeterminismus, von der traditionellen Objekt-Architektur hin zu einer prozesshaften Steuerung der Architektur.
Manfred Wolff-Plottegg ist Architekt und Ordinarius am Institut für Gebäudelehre und Entwerfen an der TU Wien. Hybrid Architektur ist Forschungsschwerpunkt zur Neudefinition des Funktionalismus.
