Outspoken and Iconoclastic Architect Will Alsop
Guest Lecturer for Chicago Architecture Foundationīs
Second Annual Hem C. Gupta Program
Monday, October 10 at 6pm
CHICAGO (September 19, 2005) London-based architect Will Alsop, Alsop Design Ltd., is one of the most
outspoken members of the architectural community here and abroad. As one of the most prominent UK
architects, his practice is an international operation guided by the principle that architecture is both a vehicle
and symbol of social change and renewal. On Monday, October 10, Will Alsop will present his revolutionary
recent projects at the Chicago Architecture Foundation at 6:00 p.m.
Will Alsopīs mission is "to give the world extraordinary objects of desire." In the process, the iconoclastic
architect sets new standards for sustainable design and technology, working closely with clients and community
groups. Alsop will present recent projects such as the Sharp Center for
Design in Toronto and Londonīs Peckham Library, which received the
2000 Stirling Prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects.
The Hem C. Gupta Lecture series, sponsored by Environmental
System Design, Inc., was created to bring an internationally renowned
member of the architecture and design community to present their
work and perspective on the built environment to CAF audiences.
Alsop was invited to be the second guest architect of the series because
of his ability to extend his philosophy from the design of individual
buildings to embrace broader principles of urbanism and city
development. By abandoning the hegemony of an acceptable style, he has rendered the whole process of
architecture one of increasing fluidity and transparency; a new and refreshing position for architecture.
Alsop follows a parallel path as an artist, feeling that it is a discipline inseparable from architecture. He was a
tutor sculpture at Central St. Martins College of Art & Design, London for several years, and has held many
other academic posts while actively promoting the artistic contribution to the built environment. His
paintings and sketches have been exhibited alongside his architectural projects in dedicated exhibitions at Sir
John Soaneīs Museum, Milton Keynes Gallery, Cube Gallery, Manchester, the British Pavilion at Venice
Biennate and is collected by the Canadian Centre for Architecture, among many others.
Reservations are recommended. Ticket prices are $25; CAF members $15. For reservations, visit
