English abstract:
A Community of Experience: Towards a New Public Realm
Tues 26 April 2005

As cities grow at an unprecedented pace, public and shared spaces become more important than ever in our lives. So why arenīt new spaces created as frequently as new buildings? Or is it up to us to create, rather than re-define, our own space in the city? Why arenīt all of our shared spaces regarded with the same respect as our public parks? Is it time to start thinking of advertising billboards and the walls of the city as having a role beyond consumerism. Could they be considered as shared surfaces for the publicīs use?

This talk featued Urbis Creative Director, Scott Burnham, celebrated engineer and urban thinker Martin Stockley and invited guests. They explored radical differences of public space, and ways in which we can form new relationships with the existing spaces which surround us.
