Lecture And Seminar Courses:
Urban Cultures
(20 credits, semester 1)

`Urban Cultures´ is a combination of student led seminars and lectures by in-house and guest speakers.

The role of the student seminars is to offer overviews of important cultural processes in relation to urban form and experience. Topics covered will include issues of gender, race, ecology, consumer capitalism, globalisation, tourism, new technologies and how cities are portrayed in film, TV and literature. You are asked to explore these issues in general and in relation to the design project´s setting.

The role of the guest lectures is to show more specific examples of cultural analysis and theory applied to cities. These lectures are delivered by guest academics and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines. The subjects of the lectures are chosen with the year´s design brief in mind.

Previous speakers on this course have included geographer Doreen Massey, film maker Patrick Kieller, professor of Urban Morphology Bill Hillier, Writer Leslie Lokko, humanitarian development architect Nabeel Hamdi, photographer Helene Binet, Architect Will Alsop, artist Mohini Chandra, cartographer Susie Hart, media professor Barry Curtis, Professor of architecture David Greene, and many other outstanding contributors.
