English abstract:
Engineers, designers and architects often look to nature for inspiration, aiming at
innovation and the improvement of architectural quality. The introduction of life
sciences expertise in the context of architecture delivers new perspectives towards
innovation in architecture and design.
Both architecture and biomimetics are vast fields. The transfer of phenomena of
nature to architectural application is difficult and the outcome is often not obvious.
A general introduction into the possible application of natural role models in
architecture is given.
In design studies, supervised by the author at the Vienna University of Technology
in recent years, biomimetics was applied in architectural design. The design
programs and studies "Transformation architecture", "Biomimetics design
proposals", "Alenia deployable structures", "Bioinspired facade systems" delivered
insights into the transformation process. The resulting projects are discussed with
regard to the quality of transfer, approaches and methods used, boundary
conditions and the selected application fields. Case studies are presented to
illustrate the analysis. Future possibilities of biomimetic application in architecture
and design fields are discussed.
