English abstract:
In the last years the planners and communities are trying new ways and new models to (re-)create public space (places, pedestrian ways, streets, side walks ...) on old historical town plans and patterns.
How can they be implemented
· in the existing mixed used urban fabric, which is increasingly loosing its functional and social diversity or
· in the mono-functional pheripherie (sprawl, satellite city...), created by expansion demand of the industrie and the zoning policies of 'modern' urban planning.

Since the 1930's no paradigm shift of the city making policies has been requested by planners and architects. The Manifestation of CIAM based on the garden city movement forced radical and basic changes for a new urban organisation, which has close parallels to the fordist production and social/economical organisation.
But the transformation of the production industries to the service industries and availibility of high technologies are rapidly changing our life style and urban environment.

'Capital', 'infrastructure' (information and communication technologies) and thereby 'power' are increasingly concentrated in the mega cities of the world, while many of the shrinking post-industrial cities are demolished, specially in eastern Europe.

The following problems of the recent urban development are the most important ones:

- Loss of diversity and variability of the urban structures,
- Disapearing retails and other weak functions, local infrastructure in the central city areas.
- Growing traffic problems.

In this context presentation the following items will be presented:
- case studies and project solutions, which show new ways especially to (re-)create and to implement new urban environmental structures,
- the new role of communities and planning authorities using new strategies,
- the transformation of the role of urban planners and architects.
