English abstract:
The current appearance of the theatre is the outcome of a history of construction, usage and decline covering more than 2000 years, as well as rediscovery, research and securing of the structure since the end of the 19th century. The theatre still constitutes impressive structural evidence pointing to the former size and importance of the ancient city of Ephesus.
Although the overall structure of the monument as well as its spatial interlock with the surrounding body of the city are now lost, the viewer still experiences the powerful impression conveyed by a place of welcome and assembly, which surely explains why it is regarded as a key attraction for visitors to the excavations at Ephesus. The theatre is not only one stage on a tour of the excavation area, but has developed into part of the main visitorsī route.
In view of this situation, in addition to the latest results of building research on the theatre auditorium, this essay also puts forward a concept for the monumentīs daily use by visitors that would protect its substance.
