English abstract:
Focus on Caral: This degree dissertation deals with Caral-Supe or rather "La ciudad sagrada de Caral", an archaeological excavation site in the north-central region of Peru. It's located 182 km north of Lima in the valley of the Río Supe, about 23 km from the coast.
Research has shown that Caral is one of the earliest known urban settlements in the Americas and is the first civilization mentioned in American history. Thus, Caral is said to be the oldest city in America.
I visited this place several times and I was really touched by thinking of the things behind and under desert sand, rubble and detritus.
On the one hand, this degree dissertation focuses onCaral itself. This includes the city with its architectural characteristics and features, its chronological classification, its state and its civilization.
In addition, it deals with its surrounding area (in particular the valley of the Río Supe) where another 17 settlements with public buildings are located. They also date back to the Pre-Ceramic period.
Caral pursued cultural exchange and had trade relations with them.
On the other hand, the paper covers the phenomenon "El Niño". Its periodicity of 3 to 8 years has a considerable negative impact on the painstaking archaeological excavations and research.
My discussions with the head of archaeologists, Ruth Shady Solís, made me think about some possible improvements and protective mechanisms concerning the local archaeological situation and I developed a concept for the protection of small excavation sites which is adapted to the specific needs of the region.
