English abstract:
Vernacular architecture features as an immediate mirror of the society that has developed the respective building tradition. As such vernacular architecture develops through the reaction to different parameters that may either influence the particular society or the buildings directly. This paper will compare the development of two vernacular house types on the East Indonesian island Flores since the beginning of European influences on the island. The argument is that the continuous involvement of the local society is essential to the development of authentic vernacular architecture. The lack of continuity or of involvement of the residents will lead to an ambivalent meaning of the house for the local society.
Even though the building traditions of the Ngadha and the Manggarai people on Flores seemed to commence their development from a similar starting point at the first European contact, they have since evolved differently. While the Ngadha have been able to continuously develop their dwelling house and slowly adapt it to the changing surroundings, the development of the Manggarai dwelling house was of discontinuous nature and its preservation is almost solely the result of outside influences. As a consequence the original types of dwelling houses today play a very different role in Ngadha and Manggarai society. This current meaning of building tradition for the Ngadha and the Manggarai will be examined here together with some of the external parameters that have led to these different developments.
