English abstract:
To what extent should post-disaster reconstruction follow local building traditions, or global standards? On the one hand, structural solutions have to regard the contemporary state of technological knowledge, but on the other hand also local characteristics have to be taken into account as an essential condition for sustainability. In planning, it is indispensable to consider the regional climate, the regional material resources, the abilities of regional craftsmen, and finally, regional features of cultural identity. Cultural identity is based on regional traditions; however we have to understand "tradition" not as a static situation, but as a dynamic evolution which conforms to the shifting of the social behaviour as well as to the enhancement of scientific knowledge. Only in this way we may achieve actual sustainability in contemporary architecture, creating a built environment with an ability to retain its validity in future.
