This master thesis deals with the architecture of Lilong-Houses in Shanghai. It should give a general idea of the emergence and the development of Lilongs. Furthermore a description by means of examples will be given of the different styles of Lilong-Quarters and their structure of development.
A central issue of this thesis represents the analysis of the development of the first Shikumen-Houses from about 1860 to about 1940.
Examples of the different types of buildings inside the Lilongs, which have been built in the course of history, should give an essential understanding for this subject.
This thesis focuses on the Shikumen-House of the old style, on the Lilong-House of the new type, on the Garden-Lilong and the Apartement-Lilong. It should be an exact description and explanation by means of examples.
Moreover this work will describe the way of living and the housing situation as well as the microeconomic aspects inside the Lilongs to create afterwards a survey of the actual state of these forms of accomodations and of the strategies of their new utilisation.

Diese Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit Lilong-Architektur in Shanghai. Dabei wird versucht ein historischer Überblick über die Entstehung und Entwicklung von Lilongs zu geben. In weiterer Folge werden an Hand von Beispielen verschiedene Lilong-Quartiere und ihre Bebauungsstruktur beschrieben.
Einen zentrales Thema dieser Master-Thesis stellt die Untersuchung der Entwicklung der ersten Shikumen-Häuser ab etwa 1860 bis ca. 1940 dar.
Beispiele für die verschiedenen Gebäudetypen, welche im Laufe der Zeit innerhalb der Lilongs errichtet wurden, sollen ein grundlegendes Verständnis für diese Thematik schaffen. Als Schwerpunkt wird das Shikumen-Haus, vor allem jenes neuen Stils, bearbeitet. Aber auch das Shikumen Haus alten Stils, sowie das Lilong Haus neuen Typs, das Garten-Lilong, als auch das Appartement-Lilong werden näher behandelt und beispielhaft erläutert.
Weiters wird auf das Leben und Wohnen, sowie die mikroökonomischen Aspekte im Lilong eingegangen um im Anschluss einen Überblick über die aktuelle Situation dieser Quartiere und Strategien für deren Neunutzung an Hand von Beispielen zu schaffen.
